The assistantships are 10-30 hours/week, provide a full tuition credit, excellent benefits (including health care), roughly $30 hourly wage, and all are unionized positions. Some students choose to remain at one assistantship throughout graduate school, while others may have several.

Stipends and Fellowship available at University of Alabama

Stipends and Fellowships are available for qualified graduate students from a variety of sources, both federal and local. The Department of Biology awards Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) to qualified students, providing an initial annual stipend of $18,000 (M.S.) or $23,000 (Ph.D.; $25,000 for candidates) as well as student health insurance and tuition remuneration. GTAs are awarded competitively each year. There are additional opportunities for students to teach for experience and pay. Graduate Research Assistants (GRAs) are also available from individual faculty mentors.

Master of Science in Biological Sciences at Western Michigan University

The Master of Science Program in the Department of Biological Sciences is a research-based Master’s degree. It is distinct from our course-based Master of Arts degree. Through in-depth research experience with a faculty mentor, preparation of an independent thesis or publications and broad coursework, students gain experiences that prepare them for careers involving field and laboratory research in biological sciences.

Most M.S. students are funded through teaching assistantships, which cover tuition and an academic-year stipend.
